Vagif Mustafaev: Soviet and Azerbaijani Filmmaker

Vagif Mustafaev is a Soviet and Azerbaijani director and screenwriter. He was born on August 28, 1953, in Baku. Mustafaev graduated from the Higher Courses for Screenwriters and Directors in Moscow in 1984. His short film "That's the Way!" (1982) won the award for "Best Directorial Work" at the All-Union Film Festival of Young Cinematographers in Moscow in 1984. His short film "Hash with Music" (1983) received the award for "Best Screenplay" at the Moscow Competition for Young Screenwriters.

Mustafaev's film "Scoundrel" (1988) won the "Golden Cane of Chaplin" award at the Gabrovo International Film Festival in 1989. It also received the main prize at the Sorrento-Neapolis International Film Festival, the "Golden Medal of Vittorio De Sica." Renowned Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci included Mustafaev's film "Scoundrel" in his list of the 35 best films in the world. The film also won numerous awards at international film festivals in Japan, Canada, the United States, and other countries.

His feature film "Outside" (1991) won two main prizes at the Golden Eagle Film Festival in Tbilisi, Georgia, and the Golden Medal of the Turkish-Islamic Cultural Center in Ankara, Turkey. In 1998, his short film "All for the Best" received four awards at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival in Germany.

Mustafaev's film "All for the Best" also won the main prize, "Best Historical Short Film," at the 4th International History Cinema Meeting in Istanbul in 2001. His films have been recognized and awarded at various international film festivals and are widely known in Azerbaijan, Russia, and other countries, translated and dubbed into many languages.

Biography

Vagif Mustafaev has been awarded numerous honors for his contribution to the development of national cinema. He has been bestowed with the Order of "Glory" of the Azerbaijan Republic and the Order of "Honor" of Georgia. The National Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Russia awarded Mustafaev the "Golden Medal" for his outstanding contribution to cinema.

From 1997 to 2008, Mustafaev created ten documentary films dedicated to the life and activities of the National Leader of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev. His films about political leaders received unprecedented awards at numerous international film festivals, indicating a great interest in Heydar Aliyev's personality worldwide. These films are widely known in Azerbaijan, Russia, and other countries, translated and dubbed into many languages.

Mustafaev's film "About True Love" won the main prize in the category "Teleportrait. Face of Time" and the Special Prize from the jury and the governor of the Moscow region, Boris Gromov, for the talented portrayal of an outstanding political figure at the 4th Eurasian Teleforum in Moscow in 2001.

The film "Heydar Aliyev: A Story of Envy" was awarded the Grand Prix at the 5th Eurasian Teleforum in 2002. In the same year, the film won one of the main prizes, the Special Prize from the jury, at the 12th International Documentary Film Festival in Yekaterinburg for its vivid and convincing portrayal of influential worldly figures.

His feature-length film "National Bomb" won the Grand Prix at the 1st International Film Festival of the CIS countries in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, "New Cinema. 21st Century," in Smolensk in 2004. In the same year, it also won the Grand Prix at the comedy film festival "Smile, Russia" in Veliky Novgorod.

At the 15th International Varna Film Festival in Bulgaria in 2007, "National Bomb" was awarded the Academic Prize of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, the "Bitter Cup."

In 2006, Mustafaev received the Grand Prix of the Eurasian Teleforum for his 8-episode feature film "The Check." The same year, he became the head of the Independent TV and Radio Company "SPACE" TV.

In 2007, Mustafaev became the chairman of the jury at the 10th Jubilee Eurasian Teleforum conducted by the Eurasian Academy of Television and Radio and received the prestigious "International Olympic Award."

For his high achievements in the field of television, Vagif Mustafaev was awarded the National Independent Prize "Gyzyl Buta" (Red Crescent).

In the beginning of 2008, the journal "Consulting and Business" awarded Mustafaev the "Ugur-2008" (Success-2008) prize and named him the "Person of the Year in Television."

At the 11th Eurasian Teleforum in Moscow, Mustafaev's film "Special Assignment," dedicated to Heydar Aliyev's contribution to the construction of the Baikal-Amur Mainline, won the Grand Prix. He was also awarded the Order of the International Union of Journalists.

On November 8, 2008, within the framework of the 11th Eurasian Teleforum, Vagif Mustafaev conducted a master class on "Laughter Brings Nations Together" for filmmakers and television professionals from more than 20 countries at the House of Cinema of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia.

In 2009, his new six-part documentary project, "The History of Our Security," was shown on television screens in Azerbaijan.

Vagif Mustafaev collaborated with many Russian cultural figures, including actors, cinematographers, composers, and artists, among them Roland Bykov, Elena Sanaeva, Lev Borisov, Vsevolod Shilovsky, Vyacheslav Shalevich, Leonid Kuravlev, Irina Kupchenko, Yuri Nazarov, Semen Farada, Alexander Kaidanovsky, Alexander Belyavsky, Andrei Martynov, Rasmey Jabrayilov, Alexei Vanin, Larisa Borodina, Valery Garkalin, Valery Ginzburg, Alexander Ilkhovsky, Valentin Piganov, Evgeny Doga, Gia Kancheli, Vyacheslav Vikanov, and many others.
