Valdis Zatlers: President of Latvia
Election and BackgroundOn July 31, 2007, the Parliament of Latvia (Saeima) elected Valdis Zatlers as the country's president. A non-partisan surgeon, Zatlers represented the ruling coalition during the election.
Early Life and Medical Career
Born on March 22, 1955, Valdis Zatlers graduated from the Riga Medical Institute in 1979. Following an internship at the Yale University School of Medicine, he worked as a trauma surgeon at the Riga City Hospital No. 2. In 1985, he became the head of the hospital's trauma department, and in 1994, he was appointed director of the Riga Traumatology and Orthopedics Hospital.
Chernobyl Disaster
Zatlers was among the medical professionals who responded to the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. His efforts in the aftermath of the nuclear accident earned him recognition for his leadership and compassion.
Public Service and Honors
Throughout the 1980s, Zatlers actively participated in the Latvian Society of Physicians. He established the Latvian Arthroscopy Association and served as its president. Additionally, he held the role of vice-president of the Latvian Association of Orthopedists. In recognition of his contributions to medicine, he was awarded the Order of the Three Stars, Latvia's highest honor.
