Valentin Granatkin: A Multi-Talented Soviet Sports Legend
Football CareerValentin Granatkin was a gifted Soviet footballer who played for several clubs throughout his career. He represented "Metropolitan," "Krasny Luch," "Rabochy Klub imeni Astakhova," "Elektrozavod," and "Lokomotiv." Notably, he also played a match for the USSR national football team.
Hockey with Ball and Puck
Granatkin's athletic prowess extended beyond football. He played hockey with a ball for the USSR national team in 1928. Later, he transitioned to hockey with a puck, joining the "Spartak" club from 1946 to 1947.
International Matches and Appearances
Throughout his career, Granatkin participated in various international matches. With the USSR national football team, he embarked on expeditions to Norway, Sweden (1930), and Turkey (1932). As a member of "Lokomotiv," he played against the Basque Country team in 1937.
Sports Administration
After retiring as a player, Granatkin dedicated himself to sports administration. He graduated from the Higher Party School of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).
Memorial and Legacy
Upon his passing, Valentin Granatkin was laid to rest at the Kuntsevo Cemetery. In 1981, the Granatkin Memorial (an international youth football tournament) was established in his honor. The 20th edition of the tournament coincided with the centenary of his birth in 2008.
On August 3, 2008, a star honoring Valentin Granatkin was unveiled on the Walk of Fame at the "Lokomotiv" stadium. His younger sister, Tatyana Tolmacheva, was a renowned figure skater and coach who achieved the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR.
