Valentin Maslakov: The Soviet and Russian Athletics Legend
Early Life and Sports CareerValentin Mikhailovich Maslakov was born on December 4, 1944, in the village of Artuki, Belarus. He graduated from the Belarusian State Institute of Physical Culture in 1971.
As a Soviet athlete, Maslakov excelled in various running disciplines. He represented SKA Minsk and CSKA Moscow in all-Union and all-Russian competitions. In 1965, he became a silver medalist in the 4x400m relay event at the USSR Championships.
Olympic Participation
The pinnacle of Maslakov's athletic career came at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. He competed in the 200m event, reaching the quarterfinals. With a time of 20.96, he finished sixth in his heat and was eliminated from the medal contention.
Coaching Career
In 1973, Maslakov transitioned into coaching. He worked with the USSR national team from 1977 to 1983, serving as the Athletics Team Coach at the 1980 and 1988 Olympic Games.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Maslakov continued his coaching role with the Russian national team. He mentored athletes at the 1992, 1996, and 2000 Olympic Games.
Administrative Roles
In addition to his coaching duties, Maslakov held several administrative positions within the Russian athletics community. He served as Vice-President of the All-Russian Athletic Federation and was elected President of the Federation of Athletics of Moscow Region in 2013.
Chief Coach and Senior Coach
From 2007 to 2015, Maslakov held the prestigious position of Chief Coach of the Russian National Athletics Team. After his tenure, he resumed his role as Senior Coach for sprints and hurdles.

Valentin Maslakov is married to Lyudmila Maslakova (Zharkova), a former track and field athlete.
