Early Life and Education

Valentina Pavlovna Kovel, a shining star on the Saint Petersburg stage, was born into a world consumed by war and hardship. As a student, her studies were constantly interrupted by air raids and bombings, forcing her and her fellow students to take refuge on rooftops to defend the city from enemy fire.

Stage Career

In 1946, Kovel began her professional acting career at the Leningrad Drama Theater named after Pushkin. In 1966, she joined the renowned Bolshoi Drama Theater named after M. Gorky, where she gained widespread recognition for her performances in productions directed by the legendary theater director Georgy Tovstonogov. Kovel became a favorite of Tovstonogov, and worked at the theater for over 30 years. Her most memorable role was as the matchmaker Kabato in the play "Khanuma."

Film and Television

Despite her success on stage, Kovel rarely appeared in film. Her notable screen appearances included roles in "Salute, Maria!" (1970), "I Ask for the Floor" (1975), "The Swindlers, or the Race for Nowhere" (1984), "In Broad Daylight..." (1983), "Dog's Heart" (1988), "Russian Symphony" (1994), and "The Wheel of Love" (1994).

Personal Life

Kovel was known for her vibrant personality and love of life. She enjoyed lively company and was always the center of attention. She had a habit of using colorful language, and remained an embodiment of optimism throughout her life. Her husband, the renowned actor Vadim Medvedev, also performed on the stage of the Bolshoi Drama Theater alongside her.
