Early Life and EducationVincas Krėvė-Mickevičiuswas born in Lithuania and established himself as a prominent critic, publicist, and political activist. He initially served in the Lithuanian army and subsequently pursued higher education at Heidelberg University in 1921. His studies, which focused on philosophy and sociology, were abruptly interrupted as he returned to Kaunas in 1924.
Founding and Editorial Roles
Krėvė-Mickevičius played an integral role in establishing and leading the nationalist student corporation "Neo Lithuania." In conjunction with this group, he published the influential journal "Jaunoji Lietuva" ("Young Lithuania") between 1923 and 1927. Subsequently, he became the editor of the newspaper "Lietuvos aidas" ("Echo of Lithuania") from 1928 to 1933, later serving as its foreign correspondent.
Political Activism and Publications
Krėvė-Mickevičius's publicistic endeavors extended beyond his role at "Lietuvos aidas." He actively contributed to the journal "Vairas" ("Helm"), which was affiliated with the Tautiškas wing of Lithuanian politics. His writings demonstrated a deep understanding of international affairs and Lithuanian societal issues.
Directing the ELTA News Agency and Arrest
In 1939, Krėvė-Mickevičius assumed the directorship of the ELTA news agency. However, his tenure was cut short by his arrest by the Soviet authorities in 1940. He was subsequently exiled to Siberia, enduring imprisonment in various locations and forced labor camps throughout the region.
Return and Posthumous Publications
Krėvė-Mickevičius returned to Lithuania in 1956 after enduring years of incarceration. His later years were dedicated to writing. Notably, he authored several informative books, including "Lenkai ir Lenkija" ("Poles and Poland"), "Prancūzija" ("France"), and "Lithuania: The First Twenty Years." Additionally, his posthumously published memoirs, "Be kaltės" ("Without Guilt") and "Nuo Griškabudi'io iki Paryžiaus" ("From Griškabudi's to Paris"), provide valuable insights into his life and the Lithuanian press during turbulent times.
