Early Life and Career
Valentine Richard Quin, later 1st Earl of Dunraven and Mount-Earl, was born on August 24, 1751. In 1781, he became a baronet. In 1800, he was created 1st Baron Adare. An ardent supporter of unionism, Quin's elevation to the peerage was recommended by Lord Cornwallis.
Marriage and Family
In 1777, Quin married Lady Frances Muriel Fox-Strangways, daughter of the 1st Earl of Ilchester. They had two children: Windham Henry Quin, who would succeed his father as 2nd Earl of Dunraven, and Lady Harriet Quin, who married Sir William Payne-Gallwey. Quin's second wife, Margaret Mary Coghlan, did not bear him any children.
Titular Elevations
In 1822, Quin was created 1st Viscount Mount-Earl and Baronet of Dunraven and Mount-Earl. He used Adare Manor as his residence. The family later moved to Dunraven Castle, the ancestral stronghold of the Wyndhams.
Military Service and Later Life
During both World Wars, Dunraven Castle was used as a military hospital. In the 1960s, it was redeveloped into a guest estate and eventually demolished in 1963. Quin died on August 24, 1824, at the age of 72. He was buried at St. Nicholas' Church in Adare, County Limerick, Ireland.
