Born into a family with no artistic background, Garkalin initially pursued a career in mechanics. However, his passion for the arts led him to abandon that path and pursue acting. Despite initial setbacks due to his unconventional appearance, he persisted and enrolled in the Gnessin State Musical College under the tutelage of Leonid Khait.

Theater Career

After graduating from Gnessin, Garkalin joined Khait's experimental theater group, "People and Puppets." This troupe toured extensively, gaining recognition for its innovative productions. Subsequently, Garkalin moved to Moscow and continued his theatrical studies at the Moscow Art Theater School under Sergei Obraztsov.
