Early Life and Education
Born on January 15, 1938, in Belarus, Valeriy Mykolayovych Kazakov's passion for physiology emerged early in his studies at the Vinnytsia Medical Institute. After completing his residency in 1966, he earned his PhD in 1971.
Academic Career
Kazakov's academic journey began as an assistant at the Vinnytsia Medical Institute. In 1970, he became the head of the Physiology Department at Kemerovo Medical Institute, and in 1972, at Donetsk Medical Institute. Under his leadership, these departments became pioneers in researching brain functions.
University Leadership
From 1975 to 1985, Kazakov served as Vice-Rector for Research at the Donetsk Medical Institute. In September 1985, he became the Rector, a position he held until 2010. During his tenure, the institution transformed into Donetsk National Medical University (1994) and later acquired national status (2007).
Contributions to Research and Education
Kazakov's vision extended beyond leadership. He played a pivotal role in advancing research and improving educational quality. His numerous scientific publications, textbooks, and inventions significantly contributed to the field of physiology. He also guided countless PhD and doctoral candidates towards successful dissertations.
Editorial and Scholarly Activities
Kazakov's expertise was recognized by his appointments to editorial boards of several Ukrainian medical journals. He established and edited "Archive of Clinical and Experimental Medicine." As head of the Specialized Council for Dissertation Defense at Donetsk National Medical University, he played a crucial role in fostering academic excellence.
Awards and Recognition
Kazakov's dedication and achievements were recognized with numerous accolades, including the titles of Professor, Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, and Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine. His scientific contributions have been widely published internationally, contributing to the global understanding of physiology.
