Early Life and Education
Biography of a Russian PsychophysiologistIn 1915, the future Russian psychophysiologist enrolled in the natural science division of St. Petersburg University. He studied there until 1922, during which time he was heavily influenced by N. E. Vvedensky and his concept of parabiosis.
Career at St. Petersburg University
From Physiology to the Study of the ParanormalAfter graduating in 1922, the scientist joined the physiology department at St. Petersburg University under Vvedensky's mentorship. While there, he conducted research on the effects of electric current on excitable tissues, developing the method of electrotonic restoration of function. He also headed the physiology laboratory at the Institute for Brain Research, founded by Vladimir Bekhterev.

Embracing ParapsychologyIn 1923, the psychophysiologist was appointed professor of physiology and zooreflexology at the Herzen Leningrad Pedagogical Institute.
