VALERY MASLOV
Valery Maslov was a distinguished Soviet athlete who excelled in both bandy and football.
Bandy
As a bandy player, Maslov was an exceptional performer. From 1959 to 1961, he played for "Trud" in Kaliningrad before joining "Dynamo Moscow" in 1961, where he remained until 1979. Maslov holds the unique distinction of being the only Soviet athlete to captain both the bandy and football national teams.
Maslov's impressive resume in bandy includes ten USSR league titles (1963, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, and 1978), five silver medals, and one bronze medal. He also played a significant role in his team's triumph in three European Champions Cups (1976, 1977, and 1979) and eight world championships (1961, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1971, 1973, 1975, and 1977). Maslov's skill and contributions earned him recognition as the best forward at the 1973 world championship. In addition, he was named to the "22 (33) Best" list of players 13 times and was twice recognized as the USSR's top forward (1970 and 1973).
Football
Maslov's football career was also noteworthy. He played for "Trud" in Kaliningrad from 1960 to 1961, "Dynamo Moscow" from 1961 to 1971, "Dynamo Makhachkala" in 1972, and "Dynamo Vologda" from 1973 to 1975. With Dynamo Moscow, he won the USSR league championship in 1963, two USSR Cups (1967 and 1970), and three runner-up finishes in the league. Maslov made his debut for the Soviet national football team in 1964 and played in eight matches, scoring two goals.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Maslov transitioned to coaching. He led "Yunosti" in Omsk (1987-1989), "Stroitel" in Syktyvkar (1992-1997), "Agrochim" in Berezniki (1998-2000), and served as a coach for "Dynamo Moscow" (1983-1985). Under his guidance, "Stroitel" became the silver medalist in the first Russian championship in 1993. Maslov also coached the Russian junior team from 1993 to 1996, leading them to a world championship title in 1994. Additionally, he coached "Spartak" in Ordzhonikidze (1981-1983) and served as a coach for "Sokol" in Saratov (1989-1990).
Legacy and Honors
Valery Maslov's contributions to bandy and football have earned him widespread recognition and accolades. He was awarded the Order of Honor in 1998 and was inducted into the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004. Maslov's exceptional skill, leadership, and dedication left an enduring legacy in both sports.
