Early Life and Education
Valery Mikhailovich Okulyov was born on April 22, 1952, in Vyatka, Russia (formerly known as Kirov). His passion for aviation stems from his childhood dream of traveling and the influence of his father's career in the industry. In 1975, he graduated from the Academy of Civil Aviation in Leningrad, earning a degree in navigation engineering.
Career in Aviation
After graduating, Okulyov began his career as a navigator for the Sverdlovsk United Aviation Detachment, flying on aircraft such as the An-24, An-12, and Tu-154. In 1985, he transferred to Aeroflot's Central Directorate of International Air Services in Moscow, where he navigated on Tu-154, Il-86, and An-124 aircraft. With his extensive experience, he eventually became a lead navigator-instructor at Aeroflot's Aviation Personnel Training Center.
Rise to Leadership at Aeroflot
In 1995, Okulyov joined Aeroflot's Board of Directors, and in August 1996, he became the company's First Deputy General Director. On May 30, 1997, he was elected General Director of Aeroflot-Russian International Airlines, receiving 92.7% of the shareholder votes. He succeeded Yevgeny Shaposhnikov, who was appointed Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation for Aviation and Cosmonautics.
Transformation of Aeroflot
Upon taking the helm of Aeroflot in 1997, Okulyov faced a company burdened with multi-million dollar debts. Over the next five years, he implemented a series of strategies that transformed it into a thriving enterprise. Today, Aeroflot is consistently ranked among the world's leading airlines and has achieved record profits despite the global crisis in air travel.
Recognition and Awards
Okulyov has been widely recognized for his achievements both as a pilot and a businessman. He has received numerous awards, including the "For Accident-Free Flight" and "Excellent Aeroflot" awards, and has been ranked as one of Russia's leading executives by magazines such as "Formula Kariery."
Ambitious Goals for Aeroflot
Okulyov envisions Aeroflot becoming one of the top ten airlines in the world for service quality and financial stability. He has made bold decisions, such as redirecting flights to Russia during the economic crisis and introducing foreign-made aircraft, to strengthen Aeroflot's position in the international market.
Personal Life and Passions
Okulyov is married and has four children. He is an avid art enthusiast, favoring European classical paintings, and enjoys engaging in active outdoor activities such as water tourism, skiing, and fishing. In 2001, he embarked on a family hiking expedition in Kamchatka.
