Valery Gitin: A Multi-faceted Ukrainian Figure

Early Life and Ancestry

Valery Gitin was born on March 12, 1942, in Ufa, Russia, into a Ukrainian family. His grandfather fought in Nestor Makhno's detachment and later in General Denikin's Volunteer Army. His father participated in the Great Patriotic War.

Educational and Professional Career

After the war, the Gitin family moved to Lviv and then in 1954 to Rostov-on-Don. In 1956, Valery returned to Kharkiv and graduated from the Kharkiv Institute of Culture.

From 1964 to 1966, he served in the Soviet Army. Upon his discharge, he led the "Blue Bird" youth theater in Kharkiv from 1968 to 1972. He subsequently directed the Palace of Culture of the Police from 1972 to 1975 and taught at the Kharkiv Institute of Culture from 1975 to 1982.

Literary and Organizational Pursuits

In the 1980s, Valery became involved in writing and literary organizations. He served as director of the National Theater of the Kharkiv Turbine Plant from 1983 to 1988 and as chief editor of the Soviet Association of Detective and Political Novels from 1988 to 1995. Since 1995, he has been the vice-president of the Association of Detective and Historical Novels.

Military and Cossack Involvement

Valery Gitin has also been active in the Cossack movement. He is the ataman (leader) of the Kharkiv City Organization of the "Cossack Army of Hetman Mazepa." He has received the Order of the Zaporozhian Army "Cossack Glory" and the Slobozhansky Cossack Cross.
