Dr. Alexander Glazko: A Renowned Geneticist and Molecular Biologist

Early Life and Education

Dr. Alexander Ivanovich Glazko was born on July 30, 1949, in Achinsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. He received his secondary education at School No. 4 in Achinsk and subsequently attended the Physics and Mathematics School of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk from 1964 to 1965. In 1972, he graduated with a degree in genetics from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Novosibirsk State University.

Career in Genetics and Research

Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1971-1990)

Dr. Glazko began his research career in 1971 at the Laboratory of Genetic Foundations of Animal Breeding at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk. While there, he simultaneously taught at Novosibirsk State University.

Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences (1990-2006)

In 1990, he was transferred to the Southern Branch of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VASKhNIL), which later became the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences (UAAS). At UAAS, he led the Laboratory of Genetic Engineering at the Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics, and later headed the Department of Agro-Ecobiotechnology (from 1994) and the Department of Radioecology (2004-2006) at the Institute of Agro-Ecology and Biotechnology.

During this period, he also taught at Kyiv State University named after T. G. Shevchenko, Kharkiv Zooveterinary Institute, National Agrarian University, and Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. In 1994, he worked as a visiting professor at Bangor University in the United Kingdom.

Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (2006-2024)

In 2006, Dr. Glazko became Deputy Director for Research at the GNI VNII Rice Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (RAAS) in Krasnodar. From 2006 until his passing, he worked at the Russian State Agrarian University - Timiryazev Agricultural Academy, where he was an advisor to the rector and subsequently the head of the Center for Nanobiotechnology.

Scientific Contributions

Dr. Glazko's research focused on genetic components of sustainable development in agricultural ecosystems. He developed the concept of genetic components in the stability of agro-ecobiocenoses. Following his investigations into the evolutionary-genetic consequences of the Chernobyl disaster (1986), he formulated a thesis on the universal population-genetic consequences of ecological catastrophes involving the elimination of genetic diversity and the shift of genetic structures toward primitive and more resilient forms.

Memberships and Honors

Dr. Glazko was a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (RASKhN) (2005), the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RAEN) (2007), and the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) (2014). He was a member of the Presidium of RAEN and the Russian Nanotechnology Society.

Legacy and Passing

Dr. Alexander Glazko passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 75. He left behind a significant legacy in the field of genetics and agricultural biotechnology.

Family

Dr. Glazko's father was Ivan Semyonovich Glazko, a renowned miner and partisan during World War II. His mother was Faina Karpovna Glazko. He had a sister, Valentina Ivanovna Orumbaev.
