Van Johnson was an American television and film actor, as well as a talented dancer. He was one of the leading actors of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer during World War II and was considered an idol of Hollywood's "Golden Age" for a long time.
Early Life
Van Johnson was born on August 25, 1916, in Newport, Rhode Island. He was the only child of housewife Loretta and plumber and real estate agent Charles Johnson. His father was an immigrant from Sweden, while his mother was from Pennsylvania. Johnson's mother suffered from alcohol addiction and left the family when he was very young. His father took on the responsibility of raising him.
Rise to Fame
In 1935, Van Johnson graduated from high school and moved to New York. He soon began participating in Broadway productions, starting with the play "Entre Nous" in 1935. A year later, he went on a tour as a dancer and then embarked on a serious acting career. In 1939, director and playwright George Abbott invited him to be part of the production "Too Many Girls." Agents from Hollywood noticed Johnson, leading to his debut at Columbia Pictures. Although his first film at Columbia was not successful, the talented actor caught the attention of Warner Brothers, who offered him an impressive salary for those times.
Career
In the early 1940s and 1950s, Van Johnson actively appeared in films, collaborating with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Some of the notable films during that time include "Two Girls and a Sailor" (1944), "Easy to Wed" (1946), "Good Old Summertime" (1949), "Remains to Be Seen" (1953), and "Easy to Love" (1953). In the mid-1950s, he starred alongside Elizabeth Taylor in "The Last Time I Saw Paris" and also appeared in the film "Brigadoon" (1954), among others. He continued to work in both film and television throughout his career.
Later Years and Legacy
Van Johnson's last film was released in 1992, titled "Clowning Around." He passed away on December 12, 2008, in New York City due to old age. He was cremated following his death.
