Biography of Emperor Wan Man
Emperor Wan Man (8-23 AD) was a Chinese emperor who held power during a tumultuous period in Chinese history. Born into a noble family, Wan Man became the regent for the young heir to the throne after the unexpected death of Emperor Ping Di in 5 AD. However, Wan Man was dissatisfied with his position and, with the support of Confucian scholars, he orchestrated a coup in 8 AD and declared himself emperor of the new Xin Dynasty.
Unfulfilled Promises
In order to solidify his rule, Emperor Wan Man promised to restore the ancient communal land system and distribute land to those in need. However, he failed to fulfill these promises. To replenish the treasury, Wan Man sharply increased taxes on peasants and craftsmen, which led to widespread discontent and anger among the populace.
War and Rebellion
The situation worsened with the outbreak of war with the Xiongnu, who resumed their raids on China and blocked the Great Silk Road for Chinese merchants. The war was lost, and the expenses drained the state treasury. Rebellions erupted in many regions of China, and the emperor attempted to suppress them with the army. However, during punitive expeditions, the soldiers switched sides and joined the rebels.
The Red Eyebrow Rebellion
The most formidable rebellion was the Red Eyebrow Rebellion, which took place in the Shandong Peninsula in 18 AD. The trigger for the rebellion was a natural disaster: the Huanghe River changed its course, dividing the Shandong Peninsula from the rest of China. Large areas were flooded, causing numerous deaths, and the survivors suffered from famine. Driven to despair, the people formed a rebel group led by a poor man named Fan Chun. He called on his followers to arm themselves and paint their eyebrows red as a distinctive mark. This popular movement went down in Chinese history as the "Red Eyebrow Rebellion."
Downfall and Execution
Emperor Wan Man dispatched his army, known as the "Tiger's Teeth," to suppress the rebellion. However, the "Tiger's Teeth" scattered at the first encounter with the rebels. The insurgents advanced towards Chang'an, where the emperor and his guard had taken refuge. In 23 AD, the capital was captured by the rebels, and Wan Man was captured. He was beheaded, and his body was dismembered.
Overall, Emperor Wan Man's reign was marked by broken promises, economic hardships, failed military campaigns, and ultimately, his downfall at the hands of the Red Eyebrow Rebellion.
