Wang Qishan: A Seasoned Statesman on the Rise

Wang Qishan, the current Mayor of Beijing, emerged as a prominent figure in the Chinese political landscape with a remarkable career spanning over decades.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1948 in Shaanxi province, Wang Qishan pursued a bachelor's degree in history at Northwest University. His academic endeavors laid the foundation for his later roles in research and governance.

Academic and Policymaking

Wang Qishan joined the Institute of Contemporary History at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, contributing to research in modern Chinese history. From 1982 to 1986, he served in the Center for Agrarian Policy Research under the CCP Central Committee Secretariat and the State Council.

Rise to Prominence

In 1983, Wang Qishan became a member of the Communist Party of China. His career trajectory accelerated rapidly as he rose through the ranks of the banking industry. In 1989, he was appointed vice president of the Construction Bank before becoming its president six years later.

In 1997, Wang Qishan was assigned to Guangdong province as vice governor and was elected to the provincial party leadership. Upon returning to Beijing in 2000, he headed the State Council's Office for Economic Restructuring. After two years in the capital, he assumed leadership roles in Hainan province.

Mayor of Beijing and Beyond

In April 2003, Wang Qishan was appointed Acting Mayor of Beijing, later becoming Mayor in August of that year. His appointment coincided with a period of scrutiny and accountability in light of the SARS epidemic. In addition to his mayoral responsibilities, Wang Qishan now also serves as Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
