Biography of Vanessa Carlton
Vanessa Carlton is a pop singer who was born on August 16, 1980, in Mitford, PA. Her parents, Ed and Heidi Carlton, had a significant influence on her musical journey. Her father was a pilot, while her mother was a pianist and teacher. Growing up, Vanessa's childhood was unusual as she was enrolled in a Montessori school at the age of two. However, her true passions were music and painting, which were introduced to her by her mother.
At the age of two, Vanessa played "It's A Small World" on the piano, showcasing her musical talent. Her mother then introduced her to various composers, from Eric Satie to Mozart and Debussy. By the age of eight, she had already composed her first musical piece, and at nine, she fell in love with ballet. Despite her obsession with ballet, her mother encouraged her to continue pursuing music.
At thirteen, Vanessa started traveling to New York to train with renowned ballet dancers and teachers such as Gelsey Kirkland and Madame Nenette Charisse. At fourteen, she was accepted into the School of American Ballet in New York, which led her to leave her family and move into a dormitory at Lincoln Center. This marked the beginning of her new life as a ballet dancer, which proved to be challenging and competitive.
Although Vanessa always had confidence in her dancing abilities, her progress started to falter over time. Feeling disappointed and abandoned at seventeen, she turned to songwriting as a source of comfort. The broken piano in her dormitory kitchen became her solace and entertainment, with Vanessa occasionally skipping ballet lessons to play on it. The songs she wrote during this time were not just piano pieces; they were accompanied by lyrics that she loved to sing since her childhood. However, she never considered herself a singer until she performed her own songs and realized that combining her voice with her music was the only way she could express herself.
After completing her education, Vanessa rented an apartment with a friend, worked as a waitress, and started performing in the business district of her city. Within a year, she signed a contract with Interscope, Geffen, A&M Records. Currently, she is in the studio recording her debut album, "Be Not Nobody," which will be released in March. She is also eagerly preparing for the release of her single, "A Thousand Miles," in early February.
Lastly, Vanessa has recently started dancing for herself at Columbia University. Although no longer pursuing ballet professionally, she continues to nurture her passion for dance.
