Early Life and Education

Born on February 27, 1981, in Los Angeles, California, Joshua Winslow Groban is an American singer whose music encompasses pop, classical crossover, and vocal genres. Groban's father is of Russian-Polish Jewish descent, while his mother is of Norwegian ancestry. In 1985, Groban's younger brother, Christopher, was born.

Groban attended Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan for musical theater from 1997 to 1998, where he studied under voice teacher Seth Riggs. In 1998, Riggs gave a cassette tape of Groban singing "All I Ask of You" from "The Phantom of the Opera" to producer David Foster. Foster was impressed and invited Groban to perform the song at California Governor Gray Davis's inauguration concert in January 1999.

Career Beginnings

Inspired by Foster, Groban pursued a more classical sound on his debut album. After releasing early singles "Alla Luce Del Sole" and "Gira Con Me," his debut album, "Josh Groban," was released in November 2001. The album featured a collaboration with Charlotte Church on "The Prayer," which they performed at the closing ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Groban's second album, "Closer," was released in November 2003. The album reflected a more mature sound, featuring a cover of Linkin Park's "My December" and collaborations with Eric Mouquet of the French duo Deep Forest. "Closer" reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

Breakthrough and Continued Success

In 2004, Groban contributed soundtracks to the films "Troy" ("Remember") and "The Polar Express" ("Believe"). He released his second live concert DVD, "Live At The Greek," in the same year.

Groban's third album, "Awake," was released in November 2006. It featured collaborations with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Herbie Hancock, and Imogen Heap. The album reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart.

Christmas Album and International Acclaim

Groban released his Christmas album, "Noël," in October 2007. The album topped the Billboard 200 chart for four consecutive weeks, becoming the first Christmas album to do so in half a century. Groban continued to perform and collaborate with renowned artists, including Placido Domingo and Charles Aznavour.

Later Career and Advocacy

In 2009, Groban released his first compilation album, "A Collection." He continued to record and perform, appearing at the 2009 inauguration of Barack Obama and advocating for the importance of arts education and funding.

As his career progressed, Groban continued to blend classical and pop elements, capturing the hearts of fans worldwide. His music has sold over 25 million records, and he has received numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy nominations.
