Life and Martyrdom of Archimandrite Valentine Mamchich

Early Life and Education

Archimandrite Valentine Mamchich, a revered saint of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, was born in 1875 in Saint Petersburg. In 1897, he graduated with honors from the Imperial School of Jurisprudence.

Monastic Service

In 1899, Mamchich entered the Tolga Monastery near Yaroslavl and was ordained a hieromonk. He later moved to the Pokrovsky Monastery in Kharkiv, where he served in various parish churches throughout the city.

Arrest and Martyrdom

On December 28, 1937, Mamchich was arrested and charged with subversive activities against the Soviet government. On December 30, he was sentenced to death by firing squad, and the sentence was carried out on January 19, 1938, in Kharkiv.

Canonization

In 1993, the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church canonized Mamchich as a local saint in the Kharkiv diocese, recognizing him as a martyr for the faith. The official ceremony of glorification took place on July 3-4, 1993, in the presence of Metropolitan Vladimir, the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
