Early Life and Communist Activism
Vasil Kolarovwas born in Burgas, Bulgaria, and actively participated in the Balkan Wars. In 1919, he became Secretary of the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party (BKP) and represented Bulgaria at the 2nd and 3rd Congresses of the Communist International (Comintern) in 1921 and 1922.
Leadership in the Comintern
In 1922, Kolarov was elected General Secretary of the Comintern, a position he held until 1924. During this time, he played a significant role in shaping the international communist movement.
Return to Bulgaria and Political Roles
Following the overthrow of the Bulgarian monarchy in 1945, Kolarov returned home and led the Bulgarian delegation at the Paris Peace Conference in 1946. He became Chairman of the Provisional Presidency of the Bulgarian People's Republic (1946-1947), effectively serving as head of state until the adoption of a new constitution in 1947.
Prime Minister and Foreign Minister
Kolarov served as Prime Minister of Bulgaria from 1949 to 1950 and concurrently as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1947 to 1949. He played a key role in Bulgaria's post-war reconstruction and the establishment of a socialist system.
Death and Legacy
Vasil Kolarov died in 1950 and was initially buried at the Mausoleum of Georgi Dimitrov. In 1990, his remains were moved to the Central Cemetery in Sofia. A village in the Tomsk Oblast of Russia was renamed Kolarovo in his honor in 1923.
