Early Life and Career
Vasili Chernienko was born on January 1, 1921, in the village of Aleksandrovka, Rostov Oblast. After completing secondary education, he worked as an electrician in Rostov. He joined the Navy in 1939 and graduated from the Yeisk Naval Aviation School in 1941.
Wartime Service
With the outbreak of World War II, Chernienko joined the front, fighting in the Baltic Sea and defending Leningrad. On September 5, 1942, he risked his life to rescue his group commander during a fierce battle, narrowly escaping with his damaged plane. As a flight leader, he led his squadron to shoot down 21 enemy aircraft in March 1944 without any losses.
Battle of Lahemaa Bay
On June 1, 1944, Chernienko's flight group provided air cover for a Soviet torpedo boat squadron in Lahemaa Bay. Despite facing overwhelming enemy air forces, they successfully countered enemy attacks, enabling the torpedo boats to complete their mission. Chernienko and his pilots shot down several enemy planes during the battle.
Hero of the Soviet Union
By July 1944, Chernienko had flown 235 combat missions, engaging in 37 air battles. He personally downed 12 enemy aircraft and participated in the destruction of eight others. For his exceptional bravery, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on August 19, 1944.
Post-War Career
After the war, Chernienko continued his service in the Air Force. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1956 and the General Staff Academy in 1963. He retired in 1983 with the rank of Major General. He lived and worked in Moscow, where he received numerous decorations for his service.
