Early Life and Career

The origins and early life of Vasyl Dvornytsky are shrouded in obscurity. He first appears in historical records in 1649, serving as a registered Cossack in the Kyiv hundred.

Participation in Khmelnytsky's Uprising

With the outbreak of Bohdan Khmelnytsky's uprising, Dvornytsky emerged as an active participant. His close association with the Hetman culminated in his appointment as Acting Kyiv Colonel in 1653. He served as an envoy to Moscow on several occasions.

Resistance to Vyhovsky

In 1658, Ivan Vyhovsky, the new Hetman, removed Dvornytsky from his position as Kyiv Colonel. However, Dvornytsky continued to lead the regiment informally, fighting against Vyhovsky's pro-Polish policies.

Kyiv Colonel and Hetman Candidate

Dvornytsky formally became the Kyiv Colonel in 1659 and aspired to the Hetmanate. He played a significant role in repelling an attack on Kyiv by Danylo Vyhovsky.

Imprisonment by Tatars

In 1660, Dvornytsky participated in Vasily Sheremetev's campaign against Lviv. During the Battle of Chudniv, he was captured by the Tatars and held captive for two years.

Support for Bryukhovetsky

At the Black Council election of 1663, Dvornytsky supported Ivan Bryukhovetsky, who became the new Hetman. From 1663 to 1668, he served as Bryukhovetsky's right-hand man.

Reward and Imprisonment

In 1665, Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich rewarded Dvornytsky's loyalty by granting him noble status. However, after Bryukhovetsky's betrayal in 1668, he was stripped of his rank, arrested, and imprisoned.

Escape and Return to Favor

After nearly a year in prison, Dvornytsky escaped and fled to Moscow in 1669, where he was received by the Tsar.

Conflict with Solomonina

Upon his return to Kyiv in 1670, Dvornytsky clashed with Kyiv Colonel Konstantyn Solomonina. Salomonina accused him of inciting unrest and arrested him. An investigation cleared Dvornytsky of wrongdoing.

Organization of Kyiv Defenses

From 1671 to 1672, Dvornytsky supervised the organization of Kyiv's outskirts defenses. He played a key role in the city's protection.

Legacy

Vasyl Dvornytsky, together with his son Ivan, compiled the " летописца Дворецких" (Dvornytsky Chronicle), a valuable historical record of the Zaporozhian Host in the mid-17th century. The chronicle advocates for strengthening Russian-Ukrainian ties and criticizes the policies of Ivan Vyhovsky, Yurii Khmelnytsky, Pavlo Teteria, and Petro Doroshenko.
