Early Life and Education

Arshak Mkhitaryan embarked on a distinguished diplomatic career after completing his higher education at Yerevan State University in 1969.

Formative Experiences

Following his university studies, Mkhitaryan pursued advanced courses at the Academy of Foreign Trade of the Armenian SSR from 1976 to 1977. Prior to this, he gained valuable experience as a Senior Technician at the Joint Radiation Laboratory of Yerevan State University in 1968-1969.

Research and Military Service

From 1969 to 1972 and 1974 to 1975, Mkhitaryan served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Physical Research of the National Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. In between these periods, he fulfilled his military obligations to the Armed Forces of the Armenian SSR from 1972 to 1974.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diplomatic Missions

Mkhitaryan's diplomatic career began in 1975 when he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Armenian SSR as a Referente in the Department of External Relations. From 1977 to 1982, he served as a Senior Engineer at the USSR's Trade Mission in Libya.

Rise in the Diplomatic Ranks

Upon his return to Armenia, Mkhitaryan held various positions of increasing responsibility within the Council of Ministers of the Armenian SSR and later the Government of Armenia. From 1983 to 2001, he rose through the ranks from Senior Referent to Head of the Department of External Relations.

Ambassadorial Appointments

Mkhitaryan's diplomatic acumen was recognized with his appointment as Armenia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to China from 2001 to 2007. Subsequently, he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan from 2009 to 2013.

Current Role

Since 2013, Mkhitaryan has assumed the prestigious role of Managing Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia.
