Early Life and Education
Vasyl Mykhailovych Kavun was born in the village of Kobrynovo, now part of the Talnivsky District in the Cherkasy Oblast of Ukraine. He graduated from the Uman Agricultural Institute in 1953, earning a Candidate of Agricultural Sciences degree.
Party and State Career
Kavun began his career in 1953 in the agricultural sector of the Vinnytsia Oblast. From 1958 to 1970, he served as chairman of the Kolkhoz named after the 22nd Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in the Vinnytsia Oblast. During his tenure, the kolkhoz achieved remarkable agricultural yields.
In 1970, Kavun was elected chairman of the executive committee of the Vinnytsia Oblast Council. He held this position until 1978, when he became the first secretary of the Zhytomyr Oblast Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU). He served in this capacity until 1989.
Political Involvement
Kavun became a member of the CPSU in 1954. He was a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU from 1961 to 1990. From 1962 to 1989, he was a deputy of the Council of the Union of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (6th-10th convocations), representing the Zhytomyr Oblast. In 1962-1974, he served as a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He was also a People's Deputy of the USSR from 1989 to 1991.
Return to Agriculture and Political Retirement
In December 1989, Kavun retired and returned to his native village, where he was elected chairman of the kolkhoz by his fellow villagers. In 1994, he was elected as an independent People's Deputy of Ukraine from the Bershad electoral district No. 54 in the Vinnytsia Oblast.
Death and Legacy
Vasyl Mykhailovych Kavun passed away on August 8, 2009, in a Kyiv hospital. He was buried in the Baikove Cemetery.
Awards and Honors
Kavun was awarded the Hero of Socialist Labor title in 1962. He also received six Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and other awards. Kavun was the first recipient of the honorary distinction "For Services to the Zhytomyr Region."
