Vasily Davidovich Korganov
Early Life and CareerVasily Davidovich Korganov was born on February 3, 1865, in Tiflis (present-day Tbilisi, Georgia) to an Armenian family. He graduated from the Nikolaevsky Engineering School in St. Petersburg and served in the Second Caucasus Sapper Battalion before retiring in 1896.
Music and Writing
Despite his military background, Korganov became renowned as a musicologist, critic, and publicist. He collaborated with numerous journals, publishing articles on the lives and works of composers such as Verdi and Mozart. He also collected antique manuscripts and documents.
Beethoven Study
Korganov's most significant contribution to musicology was his biographical essay on Beethoven, "Beethoven," published in 1900. Based on the composer's letters, this work was the first major Russian-language study of Beethoven.
Recognition and Legacy
In 1934, Korganov was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR in recognition of his contributions to music. He died on an unknown date, leaving behind a significant legacy as a scholar and cultural critic.
