Biography of Vasily Krutov

Vasily Krutov is a Ukrainian military officer and former deputy head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). He was born on October 21, 1954.

Career

Krutov began his career in 1977, serving in various positions in the KGB of the USSR in the Zaporizhia region and the central apparatus of the KGB. In 1990, he became the deputy head of the special forces unit of the KGB (Alpha Group) in Kiev.

From 1992 to 1994, Krutov worked as an advisor to the Chairman of the SBU, focusing on counterterrorism. In 1994, he became the head of the Counterterrorism and Protection Department of the SBU, leading the Ukrainian "Alpha" unit.

In 1998, Krutov was appointed deputy chairman of the SBU. From 2000 to 2002, he served as the official representative of the SBU in the Russian Federation and the authorized representative of Ukraine in the Anti-Terrorism Center of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

In 2005, Krutov became the deputy chairman of the SBU and later the first deputy chairman. He played a significant role in the development of Ukraine's first National Security Strategy.

From August 2006 to April 2014, Krutov worked as the vice president for corporate security at the Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.

On July 7, 2014, President Petro Poroshenko dismissed Vasily Krutov from his position as the first deputy chairman of the SBU and removed him from his duties as the head of the Anti-Terrorist Center.

Education

Vasily Krutov graduated with honors from the Zaporizhia State Pedagogical Institute in 1976. In 1996, he completed his studies at the National Academy of the Security Service of Ukraine, also with honors.

In 1998, Krutov earned a Doctor of Juridical Sciences degree, and in 2001, he became a professor.
