Early Life and Military Career

Vasili Kruchkov was born on October 22, 1921, in the village of Zaokskoye, Russia. After completing seven grades of secondary school, he worked as a mechanic in 1939. In 1940, he joined the Red Army. He graduated from the Bataisk Military Aviation School in 1941.

Heroic Exploits in World War II

During World War II, Kruchkov served on the Southern, Transcaucasian, North Caucasian, 4th Ukrainian, and 2nd Belorussian Fronts. He was the commander of the 163rd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment and participated in 572 combat missions, including 340 reconnaissance flights over enemy territory.

In 117 aerial battles, Kruchkov claimed 11 enemy aircraft shot down personally and 6 shared with comrades. His bravery and skill earned him the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on May 15, 1946, for his exceptional courage and military prowess.

Post-War Service and Legacy

After the war, Kruchkov continued to serve in the Soviet Air Force. He retired as a Colonel in 1971 and lived in Minsk, Belarus. Kruchkov was decorated with numerous medals and orders, including the Order of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class, and three Orders of the Red Star.

Vasili Kruchkov passed away on January 2, 1985. His legacy as an exemplary pilot and war hero continues to inspire generations of military personnel.
