Biography of Vasily Kvachantiradze
Vasily Shalvovich Kvachantiradze, a sniper and a Hero of the Soviet Union, was born in January 1907 (according to other sources - July 26) in the village of Gurianta (according to other sources - Konchkati), in what is now the Makhara district of the Republic of Georgia. He came from a peasant family and received only elementary education. Vasily worked in a collective farm before joining the Red Army in 1941.
War Achievements
During the Great Patriotic War, Vasily distinguished himself in the liberation of the Vitebsk region. From June 23 to 27, 1944, during the breakthrough of enemy defenses in the area of the Shumilino village and the destruction of the surrounded Vitebsk enemy group, he eliminated 44 German soldiers. By December 1944, Vasily Kvachantiradze, a senior sergeant in the 259th Rifle Regiment (159th Rifle Division, 43rd Army, 1st Baltic Front), had a total of 215 enemy kills to his name. On March 24, 1945, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his bravery and military valor displayed in battles against the enemy.
Post-War Life
After the war, Vasily returned to his homeland. Starting in 1947, he worked as the chairman of a collective farm. Vasily was honored with the Orders of Lenin (twice), the Red Banner, the Patriotic War 2nd Class, the Red Star, and various medals.
