Petar Velikov is a renowned Bulgarian chess grandmaster who made significant contributions to the sport both nationally and internationally.

Early Achievements

Velikov's talent was evident from a young age. He claimed the Bulgarian Junior Championship title multiple times (1972, 1973, 1975, and 1976) and achieved impressive results in global competitions. At the 1975 World Junior Championship, he placed within the top four, while at the European Junior Championships (1974 and 1975/1976), he earned fourth and top-three finishes, respectively.

National and International Success

As a member of the Bulgarian national team, Velikov participated in six Chess Olympiads from 1978 to 1990, with notable performances on the fourth and third boards. In the Bulgarian Championship, he secured top-two finishes in 1977, 1981, and 1982.

Velikov also excelled in international tournaments. He earned top-five placements in Primorско (1976 and 1977), Lódź (1978 and 1979), Albena (1979), Pernik (1981), Bucharest (1981), Pamporovo (1982), Timișoara (1982), and Varna (1985).
