Benedict Andreyevich Zmeyev, a Prominent Russian General
Ancestry and Early LifeBenedict Andreyevich Zmeyev hailed from the noble Zmeyev family, a branch of the Belyemyshevs, descended from the Prussian immigrant Lev Ivanovich. Born to Andrey Afanasyevich Zmeyev, Benedict was one of six brothers, including Ilya, a participant in Peter the Great's Great Embassy.
Military Career
Zmeyev began his military service in the reitar regiment in 1649. Distinguished in the capture of Kukonos in 1656, he was promoted to colonel and elevated to the rank of stolnik. He participated in the Russo-Polish and Russo-Swedish wars, earning significant rewards from Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. His regiment played a crucial role in the victory at Gdov in 1657.
Highest Ranks and Responsibilities
In 1678, Zmeyev became a dumny general, and in 1680, a dumny dvorianin. In 1681, he served as a voivode in Kursk. In 1682, he was appointed head of four key departments: the Razryadny, Reitarsky, Inozemskiy, and Pushkarsky Prikazes. On June 25, 1682, he was granted the rank of blizhniy okolnichy.
Political Involvement and Later Life
Zmeyev was a staunch supporter of Prince Vasily Golitsyn. After Golitsyn's downfall in 1689, Zmeyev was exiled to his village near Kostroma. However, in 1691, he was appointed voivode of the Novobogoroditskaya fortress. He served as voivode in Kursk from 1692 to 1694 and in Perm from 1695. Benedict Zmeyev had three daughters: Praskovya, Anfimiya, and Evgenia.
