Aleksandr Andreyevich Korobkov

Early Life and Military Career

Aleksandr Andreyevich Korobkov was born on June 20, 1897, in Petrovsk, now Saratov Oblast. He joined the Tsarist army in 1915 and graduated from the Orenburg School of Ensigns in 1916. During World War I, he commanded a platoon on the Southwestern Front.

Revolutionary and Interwar Periods

Korobkov joined the Red Army in August 1918 and participated in the Russian Civil War. In 1922, he graduated from the Frunze Military Academy. From 1924, he served as a commander of a rifle regiment. In 1931, he became the chief of staff of the 95th Rifle Division.

In 1936, Korobkov was appointed commander of the 100th Rifle Division. In May 1939, he became commander of the 16th Rifle Corps, and in January 1941, he became commander of the 4th Army.

World War II and Execution

At the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, the 4th Army under Korobkov's command faced the brunt of the German 2nd Panzer Group's attack. The army's defenses were quickly breached, and German forces advanced deep into Soviet territory. On June 30 or July 8 (depending on sources), Korobkov was dismissed from command and arrested for losing control of his troops, indecisiveness, and inaction.

On July 22, 1941, Korobkov was stripped of his rank, awards, and sentenced to death by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR. He was executed the same day.

Rehabilitation and Legacy

After Stalin's death, Korobkov was posthumously rehabilitated on July 31, 1957. He was restored to his military rank and awards, with the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court concluding that there was "no corpus delicti."
