Vera Salbieva: A Soviet Officer in the Great Patriotic War
Vera Salbieva was a Soviet officer who fought valiantly during the Great Patriotic War. Despite being nominated for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, she was awarded the Order of the Red Banner in 1942 for her exceptional achievements.
Early Life and Education
Salbieva was born on August 27, 1910, in the village of Khumalag, North Ossetia. Her parents, Dzadzet and Dzigida, were farmers. After completing her secondary education, she moved to Tbilisi, where she worked as a teacher and later enrolled in an industrial workers' faculty that offered military training.
Military Career
In 1931, Salbieva joined the Kiev Military School of Communications by special permission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Georgia. She joined the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) while studying there. Upon graduation, she served as a platoon commander in Novocherkassk and later in Ordzhonikidze, where she met her husband, Isam Salamov. In 1939, they moved to Moscow, where Salbieva joined a communications regiment.
Frontline Service
When the Great Patriotic War broke out, Salbieva entrusted her three children to a children's home and joined her husband at the front. She served as the communications chief for the 783rd Regiment of the 20th Army throughout the war.
Awards and Honors
For her bravery in the summer of 1941, Salbieva was nominated for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union by Major General M.I. Kozlov, but she was instead awarded the Order of the Red Banner. She also participated in the Battle of Moscow, the liberation of Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, and Czechoslovakia.
Post-War Life
After the war, Salbieva reunited with her children and settled in Moscow. She was awarded the Order of the Red Star and numerous medals in recognition of her service. Vera Salbieva passed away in Moscow on June 27, 1993, and is buried there.
