Early Life and Formative YearsBorn Véronique Raymonde Marie Combouilhaud, Véronique Genest's childhood was marked by a series of pivotal events. At the age of 10, the loss of her father led her family to relocate to Alsace, where she was enrolled in the strict religious institution "Dames de Saint-Louis." Her rebellious spirit, however, proved too much for the nuns, who eventually returned her home.
At 14, Genest found a sanctuary in theater, joining the amateur acting troupe "Compagnie de la Table Ronde." Her natural talent soon became evident, and she made her stage debut. In pursuit of her acting ambitions, she moved to Paris with her brother, Olivier.
Breakthrough and Rise to Fame
Despite her aspirations, Genest faced challenges in securing a place at the esteemed Conservatoire. Undeterred, she worked as a makeup artist while auditioning for roles.
In 1980, she landed her first minor role in Francis Girod's "The Banker." Her first major breakthrough came the following year with the mini-series "Nana," an adaptation of Émile Zola's novel. The show's director suggested she use her grandmother's maiden name as a stage name, thus becoming Véronique Genest.
"Julie Lescaut": A Defining Role
Undoubtedly, Genest's most iconic role came with the detective series "Julie Lescaut." From 1992 to 2014, she portrayed the titular police officer in 101 episodes over 22 seasons. The show became a massive hit, solidifying Genest's status as a beloved television star.
Beyond Acting: Personal Life and Business Ventures
In 1992, Genest married Meyer Bokobza, a father of two. They welcomed a son, Sam, in 1996. Together with her brother, she opened the restaurant "Courrier Sud" in 1989, which tragically closed after her brother's passing from AIDS in 1993.
Genest and her husband subsequently founded the production company Sam et Compagnie. They also purchased land in Corsica, where they built their dream home near Calvi.
Legacy and Controversies
Veronique Genest is renowned for her love of motorcycles and her extensive collection. Her name has not been without controversy. In 2013, a satirical website published a hoax article questioning her past, a reference to the revelation that actor Horst Tappert from the series "Inspector Derrick" had been an officer in the Waffen SS.
