Early Life and Education
Vyacheslav Evgenievich Yakushkin was born in 1856, the son of historian Evgeny I. Yakushkin. He attended Yaroslavl Gymnasium and later Moscow University, where he graduated with a degree in historical sciences.
Academic Career
After completing his studies, Yakushkin became a private lecturer in Russian history at Moscow University. He taught various courses, including the history of Russian education, universities, journalism, and foreign policy. In 1890, he obtained a master's degree for his dissertation on Russian land policy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Literary Activity
Yakushkin's literary career began in 1879. His articles were published in several prominent journals and newspapers, including "Vestnik Evropy," "Kriticheskoye Obozreniye," and "Russkie Vedomosti." He actively participated in "Russkie Vedomosti" until 1899, when he left the editorial staff.
Pushkin Studies
Yakushkin devoted significant effort to studying the life and work of Alexander Pushkin. He published a collection of essays titled "On Pushkin" in 1899 and "Radishchev and Pushkin" in 1887. His description of Pushkin's manuscripts in "Russkaya Starina" made a significant contribution to the study of Pushkin's texts.
Editing and Other Works
In addition to his own writings, Yakushkin edited several works, including editions of Pushkin's "Eugene Onegin," "Boris Godunov," and "Poltava." He also participated in editing the writings of Professor N.S. Tikhonravov and the collected articles of E.V. Eshevsky on Russian history.
Zemstvo Activities
Beyond academia, Yakushkin was actively involved in zemstvo (local government) work from 1889 onwards. He served as a member of the Kursk provincial zemstvo.
Later Years
Following the death of L.N. Maikov, the Russian Academy of Sciences commissioned Yakushkin to produce an academic edition of Pushkin's works. He dedicated several years to this project. Yakushkin continued to publish articles and contribute to the field of Russian history and literature until his death.
