Birth and Education

Victor Gavura was born on December 18, 1950, in present-day Rybinsk, Russia. His parents were both medical professionals who served in World War II and the Soviet-Japanese War. Gavura graduated high school in 1968 and went on to study medicine at the Zaporozhye Medical Institute, graduating in 1975.

Medical Career

After completing his medical degree, Gavura worked as a practical infectious disease physician in Zaporozhye from 1975 to 1983. He then became an assistant and later an associate professor. In 1992, he earned his doctorate in infectious diseases. From 1992 to 1995, he was a professor at the Department of Infectious Diseases at Vinnytsia Medical University. From 1995 onwards, Gavura held several leadership roles in the Chernihiv Regional Health Department, including Chief Epidemiologist, Chief Infectionist, and Head of the Department of Preventive Treatment.

Academic Achievements

Gavura continued his academic pursuits, earning a Master of Science and Doctor of Science in Infectious Diseases. He became a professor in 1994 and was appointed Head of the Department of Microbiology and Epidemiology at Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education (KMAPO) from 2009 to 2014. His research focused on viral hepatitis, modern infectious processes, and strategies for combating infectious diseases.

Notable Contributions

Gavura contributed significantly to the field of infectious disease control in Ukraine. He participated in the response to an outbreak of pseudotuberculosis in 1984, the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, and an outbreak of Coxsackie virus infection in 1992. He also led the successful epidemic control of diphtheria in the Chernihiv region in 1995.

Literary Journey

Following the dissolution of Ukraine's sanitary and epidemiological service, Gavura ventured into literature. He published his first novel, "In Kyiv, Everything Is Calm," in 2006. His subsequent novels, "Time of Fern Blossoming" (2010) and "Paint Me Rain" (2020), critically examine Ukrainian society and the challenges it faces.
