Early Life and Education
Yuri Pavlovich Lisitsyn was born on March 12, 1928, in Klin, Moscow Oblast, to Pavel Ivanovich and Ksenia Anatolyevna Lisitsyn. He completed his medical education at the 1st Moscow Lenin Order Medical Institute in 1952.
Academic Career
After earning his doctorate in 1966, Lisitsyn became a professor in 1967. In 1963, he was appointed Head of the Department of Social Hygiene and Health Organization at the 2nd Moscow Lenin Order Medical Institute, where he remains to this day.
Throughout his career, Lisitsyn held various leadership positions, including Director of the All-Union Institute of Scientific Medical Information (1972-1981), Director of the Central Publishing House "Medicine" (1981-1988), and Director of the RAMN Research Institute of the History of Medicine (1995-2000).
Research and Contributions
Lisitsyn's research focused on social grounds of healthcare, public health, and the history of medicine. He published over 600 scientific works, including over 40 books, textbooks, and encyclopedia chapters on population health, medical assistance organization, and international medical cooperation.
He developed concepts of pathology evolution and salology, emphasizing the preservation and strengthening of health and the impact of lifestyle factors. Lisitsyn also established a renowned scientific school in social hygiene, health organization, and the history of medicine.
Professional Activities
From 1957 onwards, Lisitsyn served as an expert for the WHO, participating in numerous conferences and assemblies. He advised Soviet health ministers on healthcare development and international collaborations. He is President of the Confederation of History of Medicine, Academician and Chairman of the Moscow Branch of the Petrovsky Academy of Sciences and Arts, and Editor-in-Chief of the History of Medicine section of the Great Medical Encyclopedia.
Honors and Awards
Lisitsyn is a Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation and has received the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, the Order of the Badge of Honour, and other awards. He is also a member of several international academies and scientific societies.
