Early Life and EducationViktor Korshikov, a renowned Russian opera critic and collector, was born as the adopted son of acclaimed caricaturist Vitaly Peskov. Spending his early years in Moscow, he later relocated to the United States at the age of ten. While living in New York City, he attended several schools before transitioning to homeschooling. With exceptional academic achievements, he excelled in world literature and was admitted to a prestigious college on a full scholarship. Under the mentorship of renowned American playwright Terry Quinn, Korshikov honed his writing skills and developed a passion for literature in addition to music criticism. Even after graduating, Quinn remained his literary advisor.
The Tragedy of Family Loss
After the tragic loss of his adoptive father, Vitaly Peskov, Korshikov and his family faced unimaginable adversity. Their Moscow apartment was ransacked, leaving them destitute and deprived of Peskov's valuable artwork, their home, and their hard-earned savings. Despite numerous threats and warnings, they were forced to flee the country. The indifference of the cultural elite, the inaction of authorities and law enforcement, and the limitations of rights organizations led to a devastating outcome. Unable to endure the relentless torment, betrayal, and abandonment, Korshikov's life was tragically cut short.
Musical and Literary Achievements
Korshikov began publishing music and criticism during his school years, attracting the attention of professional musicians and critics alike. Renowned for his exceptional talent and precociousness, he was sought after by major music publications for his insightful opera reviews and music theory articles. Writing in both Russian and English, Korshikov possessed a deep understanding of French, Spanish, and Italian, which he utilized in his outstanding translations. His posthumous collection, "Want Me to Teach You to Love Opera," showcases his literary flair and passion for the art form.
Collection and Legacy
Beyond his literary pursuits, Korshikov assembled an extraordinary collection of opera and vocal recordings, comprising over 200 complete operas and 100 vocalists. He donated this valuable collection to the Academic Music College at the Moscow Conservatory. Copies of his book were submitted to the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, alongside the preserved sketches of Vitaly Peskov.
