Hero of the Soviet Union
Vasiliy Timofeyevich Beztsenny was born on July 20, 1924, in the city of Dmitrievsk (now known as Makeyevka), Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. He was a Ukrainian national who received only an incomplete secondary education.
Early Life and Military Service
Beztsenny initially resided in Dmitrievsk before moving to the village of Iglino in the Iglinsky District of Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (BASSR) in February 1941. He continued his studies in Iglino while working in a collective farm.
In 1942, Beztsenny joined the Red Army and graduated from the Ufa Military Infantry School in 1943. He served on the Central, Belorussian, and 1st Belorussian fronts from May 1943.
Heroism at the Battle of the Dnieper
As a platoon commander in the 865th Rifle Regiment of the 193rd Rifle Division, 65th Army, Lieutenant Beztsenny distinguished himself during the Battle of the Dnieper. On October 15, 1943, he led his unit in successfully crossing the Dnieper River near the urban-type settlement of Loev in the Belorussian SSR. He then courageously held the right-bank bridgehead, earning him the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
Post-War Life
After being demobilized in 1945, Beztsenny worked as an assistant prosecutor in the cities of Makeyevka and Mukachevo, as well as an advocate in Luhansk. He became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1950.
Legacy
Vasiliy Timofeyevich Beztsenny passed away on December 2, 1976, and was buried in his hometown of Makeyevka. His heroic actions at the Battle of the Dnieper continue to be remembered and celebrated in Ukraine and Russia.
