Hero of the Soviet Union
Vitas was a prominent figure in the anti-fascist resistance movement in Lithuania during World War II. He is posthumously recognized as a Hero of the Soviet Union.
Anti-Fascist Leader in Vilnius
In 1940, Vitas served as the Chairman of the Vilnius City Executive Committee. From 1943 onward, he played key roles as Secretary of the underground city party committee and leader of the "Union for the Liberation of Lithuania."
Execution and Legacy
Vitas's unwavering resistance to fascism ultimately led to his execution by the Nazis. During the Soviet era, a street in Vilnius was named after him, which has since reverted to its original name of St. Casimir Street (Švento Kazimiero).
Trams in Orel
In recognition of Vitas's early leadership of the Orel City Tramway Trust in 1934, a tram depot in Orel bears his name. This serves as a testament to his multifaceted contributions, both in anti-fascist resistance and in the transportation sector.
