Victor Shelin - A Political and Economic Leader of Moldova
Early Life and CareerVictor Shelin, a prominent Moldovan politician, was born in the city of Chisinau. He graduated from the Journalism Faculty of the Moldova State University and worked at the state television from 1980 to 1989. Following his career in journalism, he ventured into entrepreneurship.
Economic Initiatives
In the period from 1996 to 2001, Shelin played a pivotal role in establishing "free economic entrepreneurship" zones in Moldova. He developed and implemented the "Technopark" economic model, serving as Deputy Chairman of the "Timpul" business club. Known for his commitment to economic development, he organized annual congresses of Moldovan business leaders to discuss issues with government authorities.
Political Engagement
After the Communist Party's rise to power in 2001, Shelin initiated the consolidation of several parties into the "Our Moldova" Alliance. While elected to the Alliance's political leadership, he declined to join any of the constituent parties. From 2003 to 2009, Shelin remained independent of political affiliations.
Throughout this period, he actively participated in Moldovan public life, serving on the Economic Council to the President and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Society of Disabled People. Shelin's contributions to the business sector earned him recognition as "Businessman of the Year" on multiple occasions.
Leadership of the Social Democratic Party
In 2009, Shelin joined the Social Democratic Party of Moldova (SDP). He proposed significant changes to the party's foreign policy and program. His efforts to modernize the SDP culminated in his election as Chairman at the XII Congress in April 2010.
