Michal Kováč: The First President of Slovakia
Early Life and EducationMichal Kováč was born on August 5, 1930, in Levice, Slovakia. He graduated from the University of Economics in Bratislava in 1954.
Academic Career
Kováč lectured at the National Bank of Cuba, the London branch of the Czechoslovak National Bank, and the Slovak University of Technology.
Political Career
Minister of FinanceKováč's political career began in September 1989, when he became Minister of Finance of the Slovak Republic.
Chairman of the National Assembly
In 1992, Kováč was elected to the National Assembly as a deputy from Eastern Slovakia. He was elected Chairman of the Assembly at its first session.
Presidency
Kováč became the first President of Slovakia after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993.
Post-Presidency
After his presidency, Kováč announced his intention to run in the 2004 presidential election.
Personal Life
Kováč is married to Emília, an Economics University professor. They have two sons.
