Early Life and EducationVictoria Nuland, a prominent American diplomat and politician, was born into a prominent family in New York City. Her father, Sherwin Bernard Nuland, was a renowned professor of surgery and bioethics. Her grandfather, Meyer Nudelman, immigrated to America from Romania in 1907. Nuland received her education at the elite boarding school, Choate Rosemary Hall, and graduated from Brown University with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Diplomatic Career
Nuland embarked on her diplomatic career in 1985, working in Guangzhou, China. Her subsequent assignments included the East Asia and Pacific Affairs Bureau, the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, and the office of Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott.
High-Level Appointments
Nuland played a pivotal role in shaping U.S. foreign policy during her tenure as Deputy Director of the State Department's Office of Soviet Union Affairs. She was awarded the Department of Defense Medal for her work during the NATO campaign against Yugoslavia.
In 1999, she joined the Council on Foreign Relations, focusing on the impact of anti-Americanism on U.S. relations. From 2000 to 2003, she served as Deputy Permanent Representative to NATO, where she was instrumental in invoking Article 5 after the September 11 attacks.

Nuland became embroiled in a diplomatic scandal in 2014 when an audio recording of a phone call between her and the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, was leaked. In the conversation, Nuland made a derogatory remark about the European Union's role in resolving the Ukraine crisis. The incident drew criticism from EU leaders.
