Biography of Gustavo Noboa
Gustavo Noboa, born in Ecuador, is a political figure and former president of the country. He hails from the political elite of the industrially developed Pacific coast. For a significant part of his life, Noboa was involved in teaching and scientific research. He served as the rector of the Catholic University of Quito for ten years before leaving to become the vice president alongside Maudad.
After the overthrow of Maudad, Gustavo Noboa, aged 61, assumed the position of the new president of Ecuador. He is a product of the political elite of the industrially developed Pacific coast of the country. Prior to his political career, he dedicated himself to teaching and scientific research. Noboa served as the rector of the Catholic University of Quito for a decade before entering politics as the vice president alongside Maudad. He is married and has six children and five grandchildren.
Upon taking office, Noboa promised to listen to the opinions of all sectors of society. He asserted the need to engage in dialogue with all political parties on key issues, as well as with trade unions and, above all, with the indigenous movement, who he believes are the most oppressed and disenfranchised people. The indigenous leaders consider Noboa to be a follower of Maudad, whose presidency led Ecuador to an economic catastrophe. They fear that the new government will continue to protect the interests of corrupt officials and bankers who have plundered the country.
Similar to his predecessor, Noboa advocated for the dollarization of the country's economy. However, unlike Maudad, he has close ties to industrial circles. It is believed that this will help garner broader support for his economic program.
Noboa declared the formation of a government that would be "open and honest" as his top priority. However, he will have to act swiftly and energetically to demonstrate his ability to overcome the economic crisis in the country.
