Rubber Man: The Ultimate Indian Contortionist
Vijay, a humble salesman, discovered an extraordinary talent within himself. With the ability to wrap his legs around his neck, fit through a tennis racket, and spread his arms behind his knees in a backbend, he defied human limits.
Journey to the Limca Book of Records
"It all started with martial arts training," Vijay reminisced. "I realized my body was so flexible that I could set a world record." Dubbed "Rubber Man," Vijay Sharma earned a place in the Limca Book of Records, India's equivalent of the Guinness Book of World Records. However, his aspirations soar far beyond national recognition.
Jackie Chan's Influence
Vijay's obsession with contortion began as a young boy, captived by Jackie Chan's adventurous stunts in action films. Hailing from the village of Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, Vijay stumbled upon martial arts classes in 1999, eager to emulate Chan's acrobatic prowess.
Experimentation and Innovation
Upon discovering his remarkable flexibility, Sharma embarked on a series of experiments. He folded himself into a compact accordion, crammed his body into a box, and attempted to drink from a bottle held between his toes and his lips.
The Tennis Racket Challenge
Inspired by a Guinness World Record, Vijay purchased a tennis racket and attempted to squeeze through its 9.5-inch frame. "I got stuck inside the racket overnight," he recalls. "I had to lock myself in my room and sleep like that. I got out at 3 AM." Despite the discomfort and bleeding, Sharma remained determined to improve his contortions.
Training and Recognition
Today, Rubber Man trains up to four hours daily. He has performed on national TV shows and competitions, including Zee TV's entertainment channel, where he showcased his most challenging stunt yet. Holding his leg perpendicular to the floor, he simultaneously slid his body and leg through the tennis racket, momentarily losing his breath in the process.
Vijay also won a silver medal in body contortion competitions in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, in 2001. He holds the record for the most eggs broken with his fingers bent backward, a quirky record previously held by Lissa Patterson since 2005.
Aspiring for Fame
Uninterested in inheriting his father's clothing business, Vijay's ultimate goal is stardom. His tireless pursuit of martial arts and contortion serves as a testament to his unwavering belief in his ability to one day make a name for himself.
