Biography of Viktor Bannikov

Viktor Bannikov was a Soviet football player, goalkeeper, and Ukrainian football official. He was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR in 1991 and was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1973.

Football Career

Bannikov began his football career at Avangard in Zhytomyr but was expelled due to being deemed unpromising. He then played for the collective sports team Shakhtyor in Korostyshiv. In June 1960, he joined Avangard in Chernihiv (later renamed Desna) upon the recommendation of players who had previously transferred from Korostyshiv to Chernihiv. During the 1961 season, Desna finished 10th in the Ukrainian zones of Class "B" and 13th among all Ukrainian teams in the Soviet Championship. Bannikov's performances in some matches were described as "fantastic", leading to his transfer to Dynamo Kyiv upon the recommendation of Chernihiv coach Iosif Lifshtiz.

National Team

Bannikov played 14 matches for the Soviet national team. He made his debut on November 29, 1964, against Bulgaria (0-0) and played his last match on August 6, 1972, against Sweden (4-4).

Coaching Career

In his coaching career, Bannikov served as the head of the Zarya team in Voroshilovgrad in 1976 and as the head coach of Spartak Zhytomyr from 1977 to 1978.

Football Federation of Ukraine

From 1991 to 1996, Bannikov served as the President of the Football Federation of Ukraine. He then became the First Vice President from 1996 to 2001.
