Biography of Viktor Goncharenko
Early Life and Playing CareerViktor Goncharenko is a Belarusian footballer and the current head coach of the BATE Borisov club. He was born in Belarus and played as a defender during his career. He started his football education at the DYUSHSH in Khoyniki and Minsk RUOR, where his first coaches were Alexander Vergeychik and Yuri Pyshnik. From 1995 to 1997, he played for RUOR before joining BATE Borisov in 1998. During his time at BATE, he won the Belarusian Championship twice (1999, 2002), finished as the runner-up twice (1998, 2000), and won a bronze medal (2001). However, his playing career was cut short due to a serious knee injury.
Coaching Career
After retiring from playing at the age of 25, Goncharenko enrolled at the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture (BGUFC) and graduated in 2004 with a degree in Football Coaching. He then joined BATE as the coach of the reserve team from 2004 to 2006. In 2007, he became the senior coach of the BATE first team and on November 13, 2007, he was appointed as the head coach. He holds a UEFA B license (obtained in December 2005), UEFA A license, and UEFA Pro license (obtained on December 24, 2010).
Success at BATE
In 2008, Goncharenko led BATE to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, becoming the youngest head coach in the history of the tournament. The team's success on the international stage, as well as winning the Belarusian Championship, earned Goncharenko the title of "Coach of the Year" in the national competition "Triumph" in 2008. He also ranked 17th in the International Federation of Football History and Statistics' ranking of the best club coaches in 2008.
Later Career
In the following years, BATE did not qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League under Goncharenko's leadership. However, they did reach the group stage of the UEFA Europa League and finished third. There were rumors about Goncharenko potentially becoming the head coach of the Russian club "Kuban" in 2009 and the Moscow club "CSKA" in 2011, but he remained with BATE. He led the team to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the second and third time in 2011 and 2012.
Achievements
Throughout his coaching career, Goncharenko has achieved several notable successes with BATE Borisov. He has won the Belarusian Championship four times (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) and has also won the Belarusian Cup twice (2010) and the Belarusian Super Cup twice (2010, 2011). He has been named the Best Coach of Belarus three times (2008, 2009, 2010).
