Early Life and Revolutionary Activity
Jaan Tomp was a prominent professional revolutionary in Russia and Estonia. Born in Estonia, Tomp became involved in the revolutionary movement in 1905 and joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP) in 1906. He played a significant role in organizing the Communist Party of Estonia.
Pre-October Revolution
In the period 1907-14, Tomp carried out party work in various locations, including St. Petersburg (Petersburg) and Tallinn. He contributed to the publication of the Bolshevist newspaper "Kiir" ("The Ray") and maintained connections with the Russian Bureau of the RSDLP Central Committee and the Bolshevik faction in the 4th State Duma.
Revolutionary Leader in Estonia
After the February Revolution of 1917, Tomp returned to St. Petersburg and later became one of the leaders of the Bolshevik organization in Estonia. He played a crucial role in organizing the Red Guard and served as Deputy Chairman of the Military Revolutionary Committee of the Estland Region from October 22, 1917.
Moscow and Investigations
From March 1918, Tomp worked in Moscow in the Supreme Revolutionary Tribunal of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) and the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission (VChK). He investigated the espionage organization of Robert Bruce Lockhart and participated in the investigation of the assassination attempt on Vladimir Lenin by Fanny Kaplan.
Return to Estonia and Underground Work
In November 1918, Tomp returned to Estonia to lead the Communist Party underground. He organized underground printing presses and published the newspaper "Communist." On May 3, 1922, Tomp was arrested and later executed by a military court on charges of treason.
