Early Life and EducationKamala Harris, America's 49th and current Vice President, was born in Oakland, California, to Jamaican and Indian immigrant parents. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, was a biomedical researcher from India, while her father, Donald J. Harris, was an economics professor from Jamaica. Harris spent her early childhood in Berkeley, California, where her mother worked at the University of California, Berkeley. She attended Thousand Oaks Elementary School, which had been desegregated through busing, and benefited from increased opportunities. At the age of 12, Harris moved with her mother and sister Maya to Montreal, where she attended Westmount High School and later studied at Howard University in Washington, D.C., earning a degree in political science and economics.
Political Activism and Law Career
As a college student, Harris became actively involved in politics. She protested against apartheid in South Africa and participated in a sit-in at the university's administration building. After graduating, she earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She worked as an assistant district attorney in Alameda County, California, before beginning her political career.
District Attorney and State Attorney General
In 2003, Harris was elected as District Attorney of San Francisco, becoming the first African American woman to hold the position. During her tenure, she implemented progressive policies such as diversion programs for nonviolent drug offenders. In 2010, Harris was elected as California's Attorney General. As the state's top law enforcement official, she focused on protecting the environment, combating human trafficking, and reforming the criminal justice system. She also played a key role in the legalization of recreational marijuana in California.
United States Senator
In 2016, Harris was elected to the United States Senate, becoming California's second African American Senator and the first South Asian-American Senator. She served on the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Harris gained national prominence for her questioning of Supreme Court nominees and her strong opposition to the Trump administration.
Vice President
In 2020, Harris was chosen as Joe Biden's running mate in his presidential campaign. They won the election, and Harris became the first female, first African American, and first South Asian-American Vice President of the United States in 2021. As Vice President, Harris has focused on issues such as immigration reform, voting rights, and reproductive rights.
