Viktor Kudryavtsev: A Legendary Figure Skating Coach

Viktor Kudryavtsev, a renowned Russian figure skating coach, has made significant contributions to the sport. As a member of the Presidium of the Moscow Figure Skating Federation and the Coaching Council of the Russian Figure Skating Federation, he plays a crucial role in shaping the future of figure skating in his country.

Early Life and Skating Career

Born in Tula, Kudryavtsev initially pursued dance at the Palace of Pioneers. At age 14, he received an offer to join the Bolshoi Theater's choreographic school. However, due to the lack of a dormitory and inability to find accommodation with relatives in Moscow, he returned to Tula.

At age 16, a figure skating group opened at the Palace of Pioneers, and Kudryavtsev embraced the opportunity to lace up his skates. Within two years, he had become the third-place finisher at the national junior championships and was preparing with the adult Soviet team for the 1956 Winter Games.

Transition to Coaching

After graduating from high school, Kudryavtsev entered the State Central Order of Lenin Institute of Physical Culture (GTSOLIFK). Upon graduating in 1960, he embarked on a coaching career that would later make history.

Coaching Success

Kudryavtsev's first significant coaching triumph came in 1975 when his pupil Sergey Volkov became the first Soviet World Champion in men's singles skating. Over the course of his career, his students have won an impressive 108 medals at national, European, and World championships.

Kudryavtsev specializes primarily in men's and women's singles skating but has also worked with pairs. Notably, his students Lyudmila Smirnova and Andrey Suraykin won the short program at the Sapporo Olympics but narrowly lost the free skate to Irina Rodnina and Alexei Ulanov by a single judge's vote.

Current Role and Personal Life

Currently, Kudryavtsev serves as the head coach at the State Educational Institution of Additional Education for Children and Youth - Children's and Youth Sports School of Higher Sportsmanship "Moskvich." He is married to his former student Marina Titova, who also pursued a coaching career after retiring from competition.
